SCHOOL BOOKS IN USE.

NO CAUSE FOR COMPLAINT. Complaints were made at a recent •neeting of the School Committees As--ociation that numerous changes had been made lately in the school books in use. At a meeting of the Association on Monday evening, Mr 8. G. Sm'th reported that he had made enquiries, and had found that there had been no changes in the books used for four or five years, but that thia year the "Alexandra Reader" had been substituted for the "Pacific Reader.'' and new copy books had ■been introduced. It therefore appeared that there was no serious cause for complaint, particularly as the committee appointed to report on the books used had included in its recommendations one to the effect that it was not advisable to make frequent changes in the author ised books, especially in the readers. Free books~could be provided in the ease of destitute children, or of parents who had mtved from .other districts, and could not afford to purchase new books. Mr Smith read the following list of hooks authorised for the year 1017, by the Taranaki Education Board:— General Reading Book.—M'Dougall's ".ilexandrn Reader.' Geographical readers.— S. I.—"The World and it; People: First Steps in Ceosraphv." (Nelson). S3.—"The World and its People: "Land and Sea." S3 and 4:"The World and its People": Australasia." (M'Dougall). (M'Dougall). 5.3 and 5.4, and likewise 5.5 and S.O may be grouped for instruction in theGeographical Readers, the prescribed portions of the books being taken in alternate years. Arithmetics: — "'Dominion Arithmetics." History.—S.3 and S.4.—"Simple Stories from English History." (Longman). "The Citizen Reader." (Cassel and Co.)
