SWIMMING.
BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. INTERESTING DAY AT THE BREAKi WATER. The New Plymouth Boys' High School ahnual swimming sports were held yester.liiy under most favorable conditions, and an enjoyable day resulted for all concerned: This year saw a. new departure, the. sports, by the courtesy of the Harbor Board, being held- in the stretch of water between the Breakwater and the wharf, and so succesful 'Was the innovation that it is certain to be adhered to in future. One great advantage was tlmt each event was able to be lield 011 a straight course, and the spectators could follow the competitors from start to finish. The weather conditions were perfect, the sea 'being beautifully, calm, whilst a mild breeze tempered the heat of the sun. There were big fields in each event, and all the boys appeal'-, ed to take naturally to the water, showing that the art of swimming is as thoroughly taught as every other branch of education at the High School. All the races were keenly contested, the lads all doing their utmost whether they had a winning chance or not, and a very healthy spirit of friendly rivalry was evident throughout. The organisation of the sports was in every way worthy of the school, the heats being got off with a promptness that would have been the envy of officials of sports clubs. The boys were on the mark at the word, and as fast as one lot reached the winning tapes, another lot >wero in the water. Mr W. H. Moves, principal of the school, acted as starter, and Mr Ryder as marksman. The finishes were very close, keeping the judges, Messrs E. 'P. Webster and Rockel, busy sorting out) the winners, but they made no mistakes, though there were numerous dead heats. The closeness of the finishes reflected great credit on the handicapping, which was done by the sports committee. Messrs McKinney and Mc.Murray, and Masters 0. Bayly, Mcitay, Callender, Goss and Tansey, who were also responsible for the completeness of the arrangements in which they received valuable assistance from the Harbor Board officials, especially in connection with the arrangement of the starting platform. Mr Bottrell rendered valuable service in charge of the fleet of boats, attending to the finishing tapes, etc. Air C. 11. Wynyard also assisted as handicapper in some of the events, and also had charge of the commissariat, the boys being entertained to lunch by the school, though the "tuck shop" in charge of Miss Bedford did good business. There was a fair attendance, including Messrs D. Hutchen (chairman), S. G. Smith and E. P. Webster, members of the board. There were not so many parents of the boys present as one could have liked to see, but this was probably due to the fact that business or distance precluded them, and not from any lack of interest in the school. The results were as follows:—:
