THE ARAHURA COLLISION.

PUMPING OPERATIONS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, March 5. Pumping operations on the Arahura were suspended at 4.30 yesterday on account of a big list that developed as the ship regained buoyancy. It was decided to wait for low tide for the ship to regain an even keel, and to take measures to prevent a further list. The vessel was again on an even keel this morning, and pumping was resumed by the Terawhiti. Chains have been attached to the Terawhiti and Tuatea to help -keep the Arahura in an upright position. A second diver has been sent from the short, to accelerate the patching work on the vessel's side, and it is hoped to make an attempt at refloating on the afternoon tide. The sea is calm and the prospects are considered satisfactory. Up till noon excellent progress was made in pumping, and the water was reduced to within 4ft. or sft. of the engine-room plates. A powerful stationary pump is being installed to provide the vessel with independent means of coping with the water when refloated. Unfortunately the weather changed about midday, and an easterly swell is interfering with the moorings of the tugboats and suspending diving operations. The engine-room staff is engaged in blocking up the rivet holes, etc., as the water in the vessel is reduced.
