FARM AND DAIRY.

lease men for the Forces, and it was taking steps on its own initiative, therefore, to prepare a reduced timetable, which would be roidy for operation, subject to the approvl of the Government on May 1. The Minister for Railways, referring to this matter today, told a reporter that the Government had not been inactive. He had consulted with the General Manager and. with his colleagues and had taken steps to prepare for the reduction in servicer that would become necessary if additional men had to bo spared from the Railway Department. He was sure that Cabinet would suport him in making a drastic cut if the necessity arose. The public wouhl realise, said the Minister, that a slight reduction in services, by the mere elimination of a train hero and there, would not release more than a handful of men and would scarcely be worth while from any point of view. The reduction would require to be large enough to free a substantial body of First Division men for enlistment in the Reinforcements, and that would mean very serious interferenc" with the present traffic arangements. Trains that were used by many people in the course of ..business and pleasure, would have to be stopped. Facilities for travel would have to be curtailed and possibly rates would have to niraised. A reduction in railway service was not to be undertaken lightly, but he could assure the public that as head of the Railway Department he was ready to do what was necessary. He hoped that it would be possible to postpone the reductions until the close of the summer, when the traffic normally showed a decrease. THK 2UTH REINFORCEMENTS. Voluntary recruiting for the 2Uth Reinforcements, which will be mobilised early in May, will close on Saturday next throughout New Zealand. Voluntary recruiting for this draft, has not been particularly active, and it is expected that a big shortage will require, to be covered by compulsory enlistment among the remaining First Division men in the Expeditionary Force Reserve. The ballot will be taken on Monday next, and probably about -1000 names will require to be, drawn. The mobilisation of the 27th Reinforcements will begin on Tuesday and will he continued during the week. On Wednesday additional drafts for the 20th Reinforcements went into camp.
