DISTRICT NEWS.
LEPPERTON. j (From Our Own Correspondent). At a meeting held 011 Saturday evening, a strong committee was formed to hold a fete on March 20, in aid of the funds of the Y.M.C.A. and kindred associations, which are assisting our £ | Idiers in camp, on sea, and in the firing line. Mr Gilford kindly offered the use of In, beautiful grounds again. As these were in close proximity to the Lepperton Junction Station his ofl'dr was gratefully accepted by the committee. I 'understand a mock court, sports, side shows and a miscellaneous stall are among a few of the devices by which it is hoped to raise a sum which will do credit to the district. The cause is a worthy one, the best testimony to that being the letters from the lads themselves, many of whom speak in glowing terms of the fine work of the Y.M.C.A.. the Salvation Army, the C.E.M.S. and other kindred societies. At a social held on Friday week, which was promoted by the local Territorials and Senior Cadets, there was a fairly large gathering, and the boys deserve a word of praise for the trouble they took over the affair, which went off very smoothly. Inclement weather somewhat hily£red the swimming classes when the schoo re-opened, but I hear that no time wai lost during last weeks sultry heat. It is intended to arrange that a visit be paid to the school by a team from the New Plymouth Life Saving Society. The members of the visiting party will demonstrate methods of resuscitation of the apparently drowned, and of saving a drowning person. ■ A further meeting of shareholders will, I understand, he held before nej.'t season to consider the question of acuv ing the manufacture of casein to the operations of the local dairy company. HURWORT (From Our Own Correspondent). A meeting of farmers of the I'rankley road factory was held on Wednesday, February 21. Mr. Baker presided over a good attendance. A suggestion was made that all the factories in the Dominion to get their suppliers to sign petitions to present- to Parliament to repeal the butter fat tax. A resolution was carried urging 011 the Government the desirability of a State Marine Insurance. The marine insurance has risen 25 per cent, since the war. Twelve years ago the State Fire Insurance started operations, and during that time have saved the people of the Dominion £2,500,000 and have built up a reserve of £150,000. If the State only do as well with marine insurance they will earn the thanks of the community. Mr. A. C. Binnic was appointed delegate to represent- Frankley road factory at the fanners meeting at Eltham. Mr Okey, M.P., who was present also intimated that lie was going.
