MILITARY SERVICE.
POSITION OF CABLE OPERATORS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Before the Third Wellington Military Service Board to-day, Markman, Chief Clerk of the Telegraph Department, asked for indefinite leave for the twelve operators in the employ of the .Eastern Extension Company at Table Bay, Nelson. He stilted that all had volunteered at the same time, not wishing to bo conscripted. Two of them had been drawn in the ballot after tlioy had volunteered., Markham declared that if all went into camp the result would be disastrous, as the cable communication between New Zealand and the outside world would be considerably jeopardised. The Government had no control over the men. A member of the Board said that this was a position where Government control was needed. The Board granted leave sine die, provided the. men remain .<• tjuuf nrcsent employment.
