Wellington, Last Night, The Mararoa, which grounded on Taurakirae Point yesterday morning, was towed off by the tug Terawhiti on high water about five o'clock last eveni ing. The vessel is apparently lindane aged, but had to be towed to port, owing to a hawser fouling the propeller. Half-an.hour after the Mararoa ground l cd the Monowai approached on her way from Auckland to Wellington, and lay oiT shore. Her boats went to the Mara* roa and transferred all the 210 passengers to the Monowai, and, despite thq thick fog, the transfer was effected without accident, the tug Natone towing the boats across the space (about twQ__niilea) between the bigger vessels. The tug Terawhiti reached the scene in the afternoon with salvage gear, got lines aboard, and ma>do fast to big anchors placed about a thousand feet to seaward. This work occupied nearly three hours, and then the Mararoa's engines worked astern, her winches hauled on the hawser to the anchors, and tho Terawhiti be-iui towing. The tide was now making, and after a little more than half an hour's hauling, the Mararoa slid oil' into deep water about five o'clock. As already stated, as the hawsers slackened when the Mararoa moved out, the bight of one got round her screw. The tug Natone then mada fast ami kept the Mararoa's head to sea, while tiie Terawhiti the anchor. About 7 o'clock this task waj completed, and the two tugs took the Mararoa in tow, arriving at Wellington a little after midnight. Captain Reed was on the bridge all night on Friday, and was there when tlia accident occurred.

The I'ateena ■ left Wellington at I'2,M a.m. on Sunday for Lvttolton, in place of the Mararoa, and will remain in that service until the latter has been docked at Lyttelton for survey, cleaning and painting. The Mapourika takes up tha Pateena's Weliinston-Picton-Nelson service, and there will be no passenger boat to Westport and Creyinouth this week* DIVER'S NARROW ESCAPE. ENTANGLED IN LOOP. Wellington, Feb. 25. While endeavouring to free the Mar>« roa's propeller from the liaffvr which fouled it yesterday, the Union Steam* ship Company's diver (Smith) met with |ft peculiar mishap. Ho was working all the afternoon, and nbout 5 o'clock fact that he gave no response to the signals indicated that something' wai wrong, and two other divers were secured. They went down and found that Smith was entangled and lisjd tightly in the loop of the hawser. Nearly two hours' work were neeessary to free him. Sinith escaped injury, though he was rnther exhausted bv his long immersion in such trying circumstances.
