THE EMPIRE.

A WONDERFUL TRAVEL FILM. "IN GREATER NEW YORK." Those who remember tlie fascinating scenes and incidents depicted in the travel picture, "The All-Red Route," shown in New Zealand with immense, success some time ago, will welcome a similar series of sight-seeing in Greater New York, to be shown on the film at the Empire next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. New York, with its magnificent splendor, squalid East Side poverty and congestion, its famous Bowery, and'other spots celebrated in romance and drama, is at once the glory and the tragedy of civilisation. The richest 'men in ' the world live there in luxurious conn'.,it. a stone's throw from the most hideous poverty it- would be possible to imagine. Masters of crime lurk ill its depths. "Greater New York" depicts all these phases of life in the most magnificent and most terrible metropolis -in the world—"a month's sight-seeing in an hour"—in a wonderful variety of scenes, which include, to mention only a few—"The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island," where the emigrants land, "Brooklyn Bridge," famous "Wall Street," "The Tombs Prison," "The Bowery," where the toughs have their abode,' "Chinatown," "Coney Island," fashionable "Fifth Avenue," "St. Patrick's Cathedral," the largest and most beautiful church in America, Clias. M. seven-million dollar and dozens of other celebrated! places and institutions. There are alsp depicted in infinite variety, tenement life in East Side, Sheep's Head Motor Speedway, showing the death of Carl Leinbipg while heading a motor race at lOfi miles an hour; sensational wreck on the elevated railway; under-ground New York; the interned German liners; the "Lusitania" leaving on her last fateful voyage; and many prominent citizens, including John Purrey Mitchell, the City's 30-year-old Mayor. The supporting 'items will include the Pathe Gazette, and some charming views of Spain. SPECIAL CHILDREN'S MATINEE TO-DAY. At 2 o'clock this afternoon a film programmo specially chosen io suit the young folks will bo presented at the Empire. The films include "Babes in the Wood" (pantomime), "A Noise from the Deep" (star Keystone comedy), "Pathe's War Gazette" (topical)', "Sea Dogs" (a Vim comedy), "The Rooster's Nightmare" (cartoon) and five others. FINAL SCREENING OF "THE GOLDEN CHANCE" TO-NIGHT. At 8 o'clock to-night will commence the last presentation of the Lasky-Para-inount feature drama, "The "Golden Chance." This fine picture features Cleo Ridgeley and Wallace Reid, and is well worth seeing. The photoplay is magnificent, and the story is most interesting and novel. But especially worth watching is Miss Ridgeley as the heroine Mary. This girl possesses the most tantalising and elusive personality of any actress yet seen on the screen. You think, at first sight, she's rather pretty, then that she is not. A moment later she smiles, and you realiso she's really lovely. You can't take your eyes from her for fear you miss a different aspect. Miss Ridgeley has curious, slanting eyes, a very short upper lip that objects to hiding her beautiful teeth; dimples, and a charming figure. Withal she is not really beautiful; but a hundred times more fascinating in her "infinite variety" than the widely advertised beauty actress. As to the beautiful young hero, Wallace Reid—well, had he not such a rosebud mouth lie would be more impressive. Rut he tries hard to make us forget it. The supporting films are excellent and varied.
