SENTENCED FOR SHEEP-.STEALIXG. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerson N., February 23. In the Supreme Court Charles and Rudolph Krecgher, two Kakariki farmers, wiio were found guilty of stealing 30 sheep from the Westoe Estate, were sentenced this morning. His Honor said the probation officer's report was unsatisfactory. They had not bee.n charged before, but they had at least been under suspicion. Each was sentenced to three years' hard labor. HEAVY RAIN CAUSES FLOODS. Whakatane, February 32. A torrential rainstorm broke over Whakatane on Wednesday night and caused considerable damage to roads and private property. ' AH the lowlying portions of the town were submerged. The Town Board office on the banks of the Wairere stream was undermined and washed fifty yards down the creek. Extensive land slips block the Valley road. Telegraphic communication is interrupted, and it will be weeks before the roads are opened to vehicular traffic. -Gisborne, February 23. Though the easterly gale of the last lew days has abated, heavy rain continues, and 7.S7in has fallen lip to 9 o'clock this morning for twelve days. Considerable silting occurred in the river harbor, interfering with- shipping. Waiapu county reports state that the storm lias been heavy, and the floods almost equal to those of May last. At Tokomarn Bay a brake, proceeding to the wharf, capsized in the stream and was washed out to sea. A motor, car'stucii in the river and was also washed to sea.

The steamer Monowai arrived last night. She had a very rough passage of 42 hours from Auckland. The Araliura has boon detained here for two days, unable to land cargo owing to the rain.
