TRANSPORT TORPEDOED. REACHES PORT SAFELY. | Received Feb. 21, 9.50 p.m. Melbourne, Feb. 21. Mr. Cook, Minister of the Navy, has been advised that the Australian "transport Berrima .was torpedoed in European waters on Sunday, but readied port safely. There were no troops aboard, but four members of the crew are missing. Till: BAG ALMOST EMPTY. Received Feb. 22, 12.23 a.m. London, Fob. 21. Apart from the Swedish steamer Hugo Hamilton, with a cargo of saltpetre from Valparaiso, the only sinking reported is that of a small fishing vesesl. ITALIAN TRADE UNAFFECTED. Rome, Feb. 20. The Messagero says that 14 transAtlantic vessels with cargoes arrived at Naples and Genoa on the 15th, 16th and 17th, and ten other steamers arrived on the 18th and 9th, apart from coastwise traders. AMERICA DEALS WITH SUBMARINES. New York, Feß. 20. The New York Herald says that a German submarine was sighted off New. port. An American warship was ordered to drive it away or sink it. The warship returned after a cruise of several hours. The officers were instructed to maintain the strictest secrecy. BRAZILIAN ACTION. Rio de Janeiro, Feb. 20 The Government states that it informed Germany of the whereabouts and routes of Brazilian ships bound for Europe, so there was no excuse for submarining. s AUSTRIA'S STANDPOINT TO BE MADE CLEAR. Amsterdam, Feb. 20. The American Ambassador in Vienna has been requested to make clear the final statement as to Austria's standpoint on submarining and whether the assurance given on the occasion of the Ancona and Persia incidents has tisen changed or withdrawn. ARRIVALS AT FRENCH PORTS. Paris, Feb. 20. An average of 108 vessels per day entered French ports last week.
