VOLUNTARY NATIONAL SERVICE
APPEAL TO STOCKBROKERS. London, Feb". 2&. Mr. Hodge, Minister of Labor, in a speech at Nottingham urged all capable of helping to join in voluntary national service, especially in steel works and shipyards. They must not -make any bones about it; if voluntarism failed workers would be taken willy nilly. London, Feb. 20.
Mr. Neville Chamberlain, at a meeting of the Stock Exchange, said that the problem of organising man-power was so complex that it could not be solved without the nation's willing help. The war was rapidly approaching a crisis. Wo believed it would finish this summer, but we could only beat the enemy if we put our whole strength into the contest.
Mr. Chamberlain suggested tlat clerks might serve two brokers, possibly closing the exchange a day, or part of a day, weekly in order to release men for national service. He urged stock brokers to consult a reprcsei«ative of his department regarding suggestions, ' ' ' ■* THE ARMY'S PRINCIPAL HEED. London, Feb. 20. It is understood that the Government has ordered the revision of all exemptions of men under 36 year's of age, The army's principal need is men fit for any service, especially for trench warfare. If those are not secured by the combing out of industries and civil employments it may be necessary to raise the military age to 50.
