CIVIL ENGINEERS' CONFERENCE.

A MILITARY SERVICE SUGGESTION

Wellington, Feb. 20. The conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers opened today. The report stated that the. total membership was 187 and the financial position was satisfactory. Messrs R. W. Holmes, S. Jickell and J. R. Cyrus Williams were appointed to fill the vacancies, on the council.

The following resolution was passed: ''That, in view of the early balloting for the (Second Division, the Defence authorities be urged to make the best possible use of civil engineers who are cither balloted for or voluntarily enlist by giving them an opportunity of serving as non-commissioned or commissioned officers, or otherwise, in enginee!'artillery and other technical branches of the service," '
