HEALTH OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
ADDRESS BY DR. TRUBY KING. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Wellington, Last Night. The conference of the Royal "New Zealand Society for the 'Protection of the Health of Woiiien and Children was opened to-day, Mrs. Algar Williams (the president) being in the chair. The Mayor, in declaring the conference open, referred to the presence of Lady Allen and congratulated lier on the honor conferred on her husband. /The Mayor paid a triaute to the great wort* carried out by the women in connection with the war, and the ..uplifting of women and the preservation of the children's welfare. New Zealand to-day stood supreme among the nations in regard to its birthrate and low mortality, and in the latter connection great praise was due to Dr. Truby King.
Dr. King then gave an address on the care of children. Referring to the infantile mortality in Wellington, he said there was no place in New Zealand where the Plunket nurses worked more zealously and successfully. The milk supply, however, it was generally admitted, was unsatisfactory, and it was pleasing to learn that the municipality had determined to improve the supply. The Plunket Society in the ten years of its existence had made very great progress and done fine work. He "foresaw wonderful results of the Society's work in the' next decade.
Dr. King stressed the importance of proper care during the first five years of a child's life, during which its physical welfare was unalterably moulded. That was the period during which the State should, specially see that a child had every chance. The conference adjourned till to-mor-row.
