The death occurred early-.yesterday morning inland of Tikorangi of Hone Puruwhare, an old Maori over 100 yeaw of age. He had resided in this district for very many years. In tie time of the whalers at Moturoa he lived in the vicinity of the breakwater, and later he resided at Smart Road. He was very well known throughout the district Regret will be felt at the news of the death of Private Ellis Eugene Harrison, third son of Mr and Mrs E. Har-
riaon, Palmer Road, Kapuni, who was reported missing since October 1, and who has been reported by a comrade to be killed in action. He was born in West land 21 years ago, and came to Taranaki when only four years of age. After leaving school he served his time, as a butcher at Kaponga. Corporal J, Muir, son of Mr. T. Muir, Hawera, who recently returned from aci tive service for home duty after beiUJf wounded, has gone to Trentham, where he will take up instructional duties in physical and bayonet drill. Corporal Muir is one of the number of New Zealand n.c.o.'s who have reee ; l special training in this branch of tl> Tvice. Another New Zealand veteran, Mr. Patrick Ready, died at the Napier Hospital on Friday at the age of 92 years. The late Mr. Ready saw lengthy service in the Crimean and Indian War and also held two medals for service in the New Zealand Maori Wars, having been first in the Imperial Forces, and transferring to the colonial forces. In 186fl he was orderly to Colonel Whitmore in the field. The deceased vet* cran was accorded a military funeral. An old colonist, in the person of Mr. Joseph Isherwood Buckton, aged 85, died, in Auckland on Friday. Mr. Bucktoh arrived in Auckland in 1862 by the M»tt ilda Whittenbach, the first ship to arriva. in New Zealand with Albartland settlers. He, his wife, and family of three children were among the first people to arrive atj Port Albert. Mr. Buckton took a keen ' interest in local affairs, and was a niaa-< ber of the Rodney County Counoil for 81, years.
