STRATFORD.

[All communications, letters! etc., left with Mr. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, February ID. The Patriotic Tea-rooms on riaturdav iverc controlled by Mrs. C. Meuli, Bird toad, and other ladies and resulted in £4 4s being secured, Mrs. Boon (Mayoress) was in cliarge of the Eed Cross Mart, and netted £lO, the aggregate, £2O 4s, being a sum that should prove very acceptable to the funds. Xext Saturday, Misses Sangster and Piuilger, of Pembroke road, will be in charge of the tea-rooms. The Mayoress welcomes all assistance. The deputation of delegates from the 4. and P. Association to Wellington in connection with the establishment of a model dairy farm in this district, have returned. They will report to the executive of the Asseociation shortly. 411 eyes are being cast on the barometer and thoughts- on New Plymouth. This week all Stratford folk and many others intend passing a day at the sea»ide. It was hardly to be wondered that the Midhirst Sports League.have decided to abandon the holding of the annual sports gathering. The meeting will not altogether elapse, as it has been to hold a farmers' picnic on March Ls>There may be no recordbreakers engaged in the various contests, but it is safe to say that the committee will do its best to secure the comfort and pleasure of patrons. There was a demand on candles for Saturday evening. As an illuminant they are rarely satisfactory and only used as a necessity. Necessity called on Saturday evening when the electric light went on strike, or decided to fuse, or did something that it usually refrains from doing. At any rate, Stratford was lightless for about twenty minutes. Mr. Newton, electrical engineer, Boon had details attended to and thence onward during the evening all Stratford were able to move about in comfort and retire with the knowledge that all was well electrically. Anzac Day is April 25. Last year the Government issued a circular recommending a special service of public worship by all denominations, and that patriotic committees might hold recruiting meetings the same evening. ."Honor to the brave" should prompt the religions bodies to memorialise the day, but in these days of the ballot the Patriotic Committee might not find it convenient to hold a recruiting meehig. The following men will leave Stratford to-morrow (Tuesday) morning to join the 20th Reinforcements:—P. R Trice, P. Burkett, J. H .Burkett, W. J McCarthy, T. Ross, I>. IT. Katwivk, J. FT. Seott*L. P. Hamerton and T. Judson. The last-named joins the Army Service Corps, the remainder joining the infantry. At YVanganni last week some excitement was caused by the crowds of women blocking the thoroughfare eager to participate in the bargains being offered in that town. There is no need for Stratford people to visit Wanganui, as. bargains in every class are being offered at C. E. James' fancy goods warehouse.*
