INSURANCE IN NEW ZEALAND.
BRITISH TRIBUTE. The Insurance News, published in England, has the following appreciative reference to the South British Insurance Company:— "In the South British we have one of the most ably managed and most successful of the colonial offices, and it is a genuine pleasure to us to see It year by year increasing in magnitude and prosperity. It represents the best ideals of our home companies, which themselves have gone through much toil and storm before those ideals have become completely established and aceeited. For instance, the South British has for a generation or more husbanded its resources with such care and stringency that its dividend has been derived entirely from interest receipts. .In this respect jt may claim to have led rather than followed. The persistent accumulation of funds has not on,'y placed the shareholders in a safe and enviable position, but has given the company the power, influence, and opportunity which wealth alone can confer. "The past year has been one of conspicuous success. The total premiums were £558,709, on which the underwriting surplus-.was £91,224, or more than 10 per cent. The unearned premium fund, or, as our New Zealand friends call it, the 'amount required to reinsure current risks,' was increased by £20,600, and the balance of £71,224 was carried to profit and loss. The dividend, not subject to the huge income tax imposed upon dwellers in the heart of the Empire, takes £45,060, of which £43,511 is provided by interest. The company, as a matter of course, is very wealthy, its total assets amounting to £1,108,334. Depreciation has manifested it* baleful effects even at the other side of the globe, and £21,203 has ' been 'written off' the investments. There is no investment reserve fund, a fact that implies that the directors are dealing effectively with the depreciation as it arises; decidedly the wisest and best course. "We congratulate our South British kinsmen on the high standing and excellent administration of their undertaking, and doubt not that, because of its constitution and methods, it will go on to still greater success. Its investments in war securities, both Imperial and local, will ultimately amount to £275,000, and the personal service and sacrifice of our. fellow-subjects of the under-world are too supreme and magnificent to he put into words. We nmv be sure that in the great struggle for freedom and righteousness now raging the staff of the South British have taken a full share."—"New Zealand Herald," January 31.
