ASSISTANT SECRETARYSHIP^ MR. E. a JOHNSTOS APPOINTED, At a special meeting of the Taranakl Education Board held at Stratford oni Saturday afternoon, all the members with (lie exception of Mr Dixon present, Mr E. F. Johnston, of Christ* church, was appointed assistant secret tary. Mr Johnston, who ia a married man, was born 40 years ago at Worley, York'. flhire, the birth-place of the ex-Premier, Mr Aj-rjuith. He received a school iind college education. Sine* coming to New Zealand Mr Johnson acted' for some years as secretary of »' limited liability company, and eleven years ago he obtained the position oi accountant on the staff of the North Canterbury Education Board, out ol some fifty applicants, and on the amatf gamation of education boards in Cain terbury he became accountant and firsb clerk to the Canterbury Board. Mi; Johnaon'sOtestimonials from the chain man and members of the Canterbury] Board, school committees, teachers' as« sociations, and others connected with education work, speak of his tact ana* ability. Mr Johnson has special know* ledge of secretarial Vork, accountancy, and compiling returns, and he holds a> College of Preceptors' certificate. Mr Johnson has taken a keen interest! in musical matters, and is treasurer ofi tiie Christchurch Glee and Madrigal So-; tiety. He is also a keen cricketer, anrfj is one of Canterbury's first-grade playi ers, some years ago having headed the, averages in bowling. He is also a ten-" nis player. Mrs Johnson is well knownj in swimming circles, being captain 0? the Christchurch Ladies' Swimming Club. Mr Johnson will probably takq up Us duties in New Plymouth at tbjj end of March.
