Sir James Carroll fa at present in Capetown. Last week lio cabled to friends in Gisborne that he was in good health. Among those who have volunteered for service and have been accepted are Messrs J. Q. List and H. C. Baker, of N T ew( Plymouth., Mr. J. R, M. Stewart, district inspector for the National Mutual Life Association, has been appointed to succeed the late Mr. T. Jance, as district manager for Wanganui and Taranaki. Messrs D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., D. M*. Laren, and 0. C Williams, members of the First Wellington Military Service Board, and Captain Walker, military representative, arrived in New Plymouth on Saturday evening The Board will sit at the Court House to-day and tomorrow. l The death occurred on Saturday morning at Dnnedin of Sir Geo. McLean, M.L.C. Deceased, who was 82 years of age, was born at Elgin, Scotland, on September 10, 1834. He was educated at Elgin and St. Andrew's, and in 1552 came out to Victoria, where he entered the Oriental Bank at Melbourne. In 18C7 he was appointed manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Dnnodin, and subsequently entered into private business. He was Provincial Treasurer of Otago in 1809, and in 1871 was elected member of Parliament for Waikonaiti, which he continued to represent for ten years. He was n member of the Vogel and Atkinson Cabinets, and in ISBI was appointed to the Legislative Council. For some time he was chairman of the Colonial Bank, and was closely identified with the Union Steam Ship Company since its inception until be resigned the chairmanship in 1907. He was for many years a liberal supporter of the Turf, but for the last year or two he has had no horses running.
