CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Feb. 15. Donald Murray Mathcson, chief clerk at Nelson railway station, was charged at the Magistrate's Court to-day with stealing £(iiS between September, IS>l G, and February, 1917, the property of the New Zealand Government. He was remanded till Wednesday. THE HAWKE'S BAY SEAT. Hastings, Feb. 15. . Mr. Mac Donald, who has been here for several days in connection witli the selection of a candidate for the Hnwke's Bay seat, left for Wellington this morning, and returns on Monday next. The result of his vipit was not made public, but Sir John Findlay is-regarded as likely to be selected. It is persistently rumored that a meeting of Liberal delegates on Monday next will be asked to decide in Sir John's favor, and that- there will be no election unless a free lance enters the lists.
Sir John is expected in Hastings on Friday.
NATIONAL RESERVE CONFERENCE. Wellington, Feb. 15. The National Reserve Conference today unanimously decided that the Dominion Cominandant be urged to issue orders to district commandants and group commanders, and that on no account should any unit of the'- National Reserve be permitted to take any action as an organisation in dealing with industrial disputes. It also carried motions having for their object an increase in the sphere of operations of tho reserve. These were submitted to Sir Jaa. Allen, who received them favorably.
