TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") That the ballot is as fairly conducted as "Tatts.'' nobody doubts, but the same vagaries of fortune which eharac- ~ tersed the Tasmanian gamble are noticeable in. "Bill" Ma*sey's "art union. ' Racing stables have been heavily culled in places, while in others they hava escaped scathless. Ju»v consider the misfortunes of the "Uighden" stable. Arthur Olliver drew the No. 1 marble, ami went into camp immediately. "Billy'' Hell failed to pass for active service, hut was reckoned strong enough for home service. The imported jockey Metcalfe was next "lauded,'' and in this week's bal- ' lot the Uighden trainer, George Price, drew a prize. The only thing left for the lady who races as "Mr. Highdcn" is , to sell the horses and quit the game. ' The ''midgets" are apparently the unlucky ones, and meanwhile dozens of strong, strapping young fellows walk the street* in safety. Some chaps have | ali the luck! J A par. has been going the round* j that- Bisisgne was under offer to an Australian buyer at 2000 guineas. The fact of the matter is that at the Auckland Spring Meeting Mr. Alexander was asked to put a price on the horse, and, not being anxious to sell, he asked 4000 guineas, which was subsequently withdrawn. Hisogne has won over £2OOO in stakes alone since then, and Mr, Alexander is now even less inclined to part with the horse. Interlude lightened up considerably as the result of racing at Hawera and New 'Plymouth, but she is picking up again now, and should be right for the Wangamii meeting. Some prevaricator told this scribe that Rawakore was a good horse. After the handsome daughter of Penury and Madam Sonlt had closed up like a punctured football in the last race at New Plymouth, "Motorua' 1 could have slain the wastrel! Cora Ora won the Farewell Handicap very nicely, coining from behind and smothering Veto and bfidy Middleton in good style. The six furlongs were run down in 1.11 2-s—a smart gallop. The Inglewood-owned mare is engaged in the Flying at Wangaimi. 1 "Pv corry," said Mrs. Tukapa, "that ■ le goot dream 1 have lars week. I see ta black pig—te toa tore —sitting on te end o' te bed. 'That te tip!' I yell. Te boss, he jump up an' give mete crack. > "What for you wake me up te middle o' te night: V You. te worry had housewife for te sleep.' Py corry, that te tip, too! : [ go to te races an' back te double,
Toatere—Housewife! Kaipai!' 1
