INCREASING ATTENDANCE. A meeting of the Centra] School Committee was hold 011 Tuesday evening li was reported that (lie average attoiulanee for last week at the Centra! ■School, including the Vogeltown Side .School, was being an increase of 20 nn the cor re umnding week last year. The school lot ■! i sixth standard pupils. who proceeded to '/he High School, Technical (.'cllt-go. or to business, and 20 pupils who left tor ■■(her reasons, chiefly change of '.Tsidence. There are now (>55 pupils on the roll, against (ill.l at this time last year—good evidence of the progress of tin. town in population. It was decided lo ask the Education, lioard to alle.w children attending the ichoiil an hour and a quarter for dinner, instead of one hour as? at pr"sont. It was pointed out that in the case of children living at some distance from the school the interval of one hour was hardly suflicient, while it was certainly far better for them to go home and Set a proper meal, instead of taking their lunch with them. A complaint was received to the effect that children were in some cases ordered to purchase more expensive blocks than were necessary. The chairman was deputed to sec the headmaster in order to discover whether there was any ground for the allegation. It was also suggesfc., that there was a tendency to make children get too many ev.ncise books, which were often thrown nside before they were tilled. It was fell that in matters of this kind teachers could do a good deal to save parents' pockets without any sacrifice of ellicieney.
