BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, February 12. The monthly meeting was held in tho Council Chambers this evening. Present: Tiie Mavor (Mr. J. W. Boon) and Crs. A. .1. J. Xcilson, Stratford, applied for the use of the Council's crushing plant to crush 5000 yards of boulder stone at [nglewood for the Moa Road Board, and also enquiring cost of hire and conditions.—The Works Committee reported that the Board had been written to, and the use of the crusher offered on the usual terms.
Mrs. X. J. Rinrmington requested the Council to remove the hank of earth opposite her section in Orlando street, thus enabling her to have an entrance to her property.—The Works Committee recommended that the application be granted on the usual terms. M. Foley complained of the dilapidated state of the fence between his section and the electric light property The Lighting Committee reported that the Council recognised no liability. The Stratford Amusements Co. applied for a 2-inch fire prevention water service.—Referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. Hon. J. Allen, Acting-Prime Minister, acknowledged the Council's resolution re organising the resources and industries of the Dominion. Action had been taken in the matter, and include steps to protect the farms of men who are going to the front.—Received. Messrs F. A. Bam ford, W. Jones, M. Moroney, <3. Smith, F. M. Wilson and J. Kirby requested the Council to erect a light at tho corner of Cordelia and Celia streets.—Referred to the Lighting Committee. GENERAL. The ranger reported that lie had impounded four horses and three head of cattle, and was now engaged in dog-tax collecting, inspecting backyards and drains. Notices had been served on two property-owners to cut hedges abutting on the footpath. The Town Hall had been let on three occasions.—Received. A. M. Spilman, abattoir manager, reported that slaughtering fees received during the month totalled £sl 4s, sale of offal Ai 10s, and| paddock rents £ 12 10s.' Cattle slaughtered totalled 98, sheep 260, pigs 41.—Received. LIGHTING BROADWAY. The recommendation of the Lighting Committee that more standards be set up in the main streets met with very favorable .comment. A motion was carried—"That Broadway be lighted on the following system: Seven iron lumps of four 100-candle-power each be .placed in the centre of the streets, the lumps to be distributed as follows: One at Page, Regan and Fenton streets, one five chains north of Regan street, and three between Fenton and Regan streets; also to fix on present brackets at the side of the street one 100-candle power lamp at Celia street, ..cab street, Seylon street and Pcmliioke road. The engineer to proceed with the work at once. Tile Council resolved that the following charges be made for the current sold within the borough:—Lighting, fld per unit, with a discount of id, niimimnuni 4 units; motors, 4d, Id, Mi: heaters, 4d. Id, and a further discount of Id for additional units over 20, minimum to be 20. Below the minimum units to lie charged at lighting rates up to 8 units. NOTICE OF MOTION. In the absence of Cr. Lawson, his notice of motion —'-That the borough engineer be placed on the same footing as the electrical engineer regarding the ordering of goods"—was moved by Cr. Tlioni] -mi. '■ The district ollieers' report to the delegates stated that during the year 10 male members ana six members' wives died. Funeral money totalled £O2O. The following members had died on the battlefields of Europe: Bros. B. Paul, V. Brown, C. Kennedy, 0. W. Payne, K. Marett, E. G. Tuiinic-lilY, (i. E. Bcndall, and D. C. Williams. Whilst it was gratifying to know that Che Order is maintaining its quota to the Expeditionary Forces, the financing of the insurance and death dues has caused some anxiety. The Government paying half the insurance premium on members going to" the front had been a great help, the Subsidiary Court will be held at Napier on February 21, D.S.C.R., Bro. J. 1). Murray and D.S., Bro. A. J. Tunbridge being delegates. 'P.D.C.R., Bro. A. Coldwell had been nominated for the position of H.C.S.C.R., and also for High Court Treasurer, which latter office he at present holds. The Benevolent Fund showed that., the assuranoc premiums on war members totalled X'3'2B 2.5. <; P.D.C'.R.., Bro. T. M. Avery was presented with a P.D.C.R. jewel, in recognition of his work on behalf of the district. The recipient suitably acknowledged the gilt. The publication of names for the I'oiirfh ballot wealed considerable interest here. Several well-known identities are included in the list. Dinple, who lias represented Taranaki on the Board of Agriculture during the past three years, declined nomination at. the delegates' meeting at Hnwera on Monday. During his association with the Board, our member has done his best to push forward the claims of the fanner, but, owing to the Avar, the meetings have been irregular, and prohabiv not so successful as one could wish. TTis successor, Mr. 0. HawUcn, was very outspoken. He considered that in the past positions on various bodies hftd been filled by mCn who had passed the initiative stage, and it was time they were replaced by younger men with more energy. Messrs. T!. Masters (chairman), TT. Trimble, and K. Dixon, members of the Taranaki Kducution Board, visited the local schools this afternoon. f At Wanganui last week some excitement was caused by the crowds of women blocking the thoroughfare eager to participate in the bargains being ottered in that town.
