A London cable announces the death of J. W. Waterhouse, R.A., the painter. An Ottawa cablegram announces the death of Sir Melbourne Tait, Chief Justice of Quebec. Captain Coleman, of Wangamil, has arrived in New Plymouth, in order to visit the Mountain House for the benefit of his health. Mr. L. M. Moss, who for some timehas been associated wifii Messrs Halliwcll, Spratt and Thomson, Hawera, ban enlisted and been accepted for service. Mr. Moss offered last year, -but was rejected on account of 'the state of his eyesight. Advice has been received that Corporal ■!'. Allen, who before he left for the front with the 7th Reinforcements was employed by Messrs Smart Bros., was admitted'to the 32nd Stationary Hospital at Wimereux suffering from trench fever. Police Inspector Edward Wilson, m charge of the Wanganui district, Ims been prompted to the honorary rank of superintendent. He will take the title of superintendent, but will not be entitled to the pay of that rank. Superintendent Wilson retires from the force shortly on superannuation.
A London cablegram reports the death of the Duke of Norfolk, the premier Duke mid Enrl of England. The enrldom was fruited in 1131) and the dukedom in 145.1. The Duke, who was born in 1847, wa.; spr-cial envoy to the Popo in ISB7, Post-master-General 181)5-11)00, and served in South Africa in 1900. His heir is tho Karl of Ariimlol, who was born in 190 S. Tho friends of Private C. Edwards, who lelt ll'awera over twelve months ago, and has been in France for some months, will lean; with pleasure that he lias been awarded a Military Medal for bravery in the field. Sir Thomas Mackenzie sent him a letter of congratulation, and this he has sent on to Mrs. Edwards.
Lmly Dorothio Fcilding, the Earl of Denbigh's daughter, is first on the list of British women Military Medallists, says nn c.vchangc. The honor is awarded for her services with Dr. Hector Munro's field ainbulunce. For months she tended the sick and wounded in the eellar of a house close to the Belgian trenches, until the situation became bo dangerous that Lady Dorothie and her companions were persuaded to move. Ten minutes alter they had removed their belongings a German shell crashed on the house and destroyed it. King Albert bestowed on Lady Dorothie Belgium's highest military decoration, the Order of Leopold, ami she was mentioned in a French brigade order for "giving to all almost daily the finest example of contempt of danger and devotion to duty."
