BOROUGH COUNCIL.

•MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Xcw Plymouth lioroush Council was held last evening. Present: T!ic Mavor (Mr. C. If. llurgcs-'), Crs. L. M. Monteath, J. S. S. Medlev, J. YV. Hayden, J\ E. Wilson, A. 11. Johnstone, W. A. Collis, W. F. Short, 8. J. Smith, K. Griffiths, J T. Mannix and A. E. Watkins. An apology for absence was received from O. F. J Hill. CARRIXGTOX ROAD.< Fresh estimates for Carrington road, based on amended plans, were submitted by the engineer. The gradients will l:c from Courteiiny street 1-15 for I>/, ehains towards Vivian street junction, and 1-2S and 1-11-4 for the next four chains, rising f or four chains at 1-U and 1-10 to Pcndarves street. For comparison he pointed out that from Egmoirt street to Robe street the gradient is I -15. These gradients reduce the filling to a minimum. The width of the road will vary somewhat between 80 and 110 links, being wider at turns. The sharp comer near Lemon street will be cut back. One footpath will be continuous from Victoria, road to Courtenay street, and kerbed, channelled and gravelled. The estimated cost of forming Carrington road to Pcndarves street is ,C72!t, from I'cndarves street into Victoria road A!],".!), Pcndarves street .-C7, total' .CH/ii. This shows a considerable saving over the original estimate. The engineer was authorised to proiced with the work in accordance with \\k report. WATER FOR SHOWGROUNDS. _ A sub-commiltco recommended—(l) That the Agricultural Society be charged £."> ior water for their autumn show this season, the charge for future shows to be fixed after the Council has a better idea as to what water is used at. the showgrounds; (2) that after the vhow the water be turned ofl" and only turned on again when required for fature sliows.—Adopted.

EEXTAL OF SUB-STATIOX. A discussion took place regarding the rental to lie paid by the Borough Conn"il to the Kleetrie light Department for the use of the offices in the sub-station. The town clerk estimated a fair rental at ,t!2UO, while the department claimed .C2?J). The Mayor did not approve of cither estimate, stating that if the Electric Light Department got £l5O it -lioukl consider itself fortunate. The Department made a mistake in building so extensively, and had the Council not taken up a portion of tho building that portion would have remained idle. The money raised for the municipal offices and museum was lying idle and only earning 2'/ s per cent, interest.

Cr. Nontenth agreed that a mistake had been made in 'building such large premises, but claimed that the rental asked by the department was fair.

Cr. Johnstone pointed out that the electric light department had made wonderful progress in past, years, and in a fe\v years the present station would [irobivbly be not too large. It was I'mally decided to fix the rental at £2OO. OENERAL. The Wangnmii Chamber of Commerce invited the Council to send a delegate in attend a conference of representatives of local bodies to be held at vVang.inui on March 7 to consider the nuestion of developing the water power of the west const of the North Island.— It was decided not to send a delegate, hut to express sympathy with the sell erne.

The North Taranaki head centre of the Hoyal Life-Saving Society asked the Council to fill the municipal' baths with fresh water for the Society's demonstration to be held on February 22. Granted.

Cr. Griffiths drew attention to the state of the Mangorei road, and suggested that the engineer report as early as possible ou the road.—The sugaestion was adopted.
