Another Stratford lad to win honors on the battlefield is Lance-Corporal ,1. W. Voyle, 2nd Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Brigade. For bravery on the Somme he has received the Military 'Medal, and has forwarded the ribbon of same'to bis mother. Among the congratulations received was one from the High Commissioner, Sir Thomas Mackenzie. A second son, Harry, Is in camp at Trentham. He was previously a member of the Samoan contingent. Naturally Mrs. Voyle and her relatives are proud of the distinction won by Lance-Corporal Voyle. The Domain Board met on Friday, Mr It. Mclv. Morison picsiding. Several property-owners in the vicinity of Victoria 'Park, who have found the ground! a convenient locality to dump rubbish, are to be requested to discontinue the practice. The Beautifying Society is to be approached for a donation of £lO towards fixing stepping-stones in the Patea river at the Brecon Road, and for other imporvements. The Rev. T. B. Tinsley's address on ''Liquor Reform" at the last meeting of the Stratford branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union attracted a great deal of attention. Mr. Tinsley spoke of the ravages of the drink, and illustrated by figures the wonderful results secured by the drastic treatment of the question by the Russian Government when they closed all liquor shops, sacrificing revenue to the extent of over £113.000,000. The value of the reforms efieeted in Canada and the United States were- touched upon, also the early closing movement in Australia, where every State, excepting Queensland, adopted the shutting down of hotels early in the evening. The public of New Zealand should, he contended, again petition for closing hoteles at 15 o'clock, and, failing this, should demand a referendum on the subject. At the last meeting of the Stratford Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union adverse comment was made on the action of the Government in persisting in holding territorial camps at the height of the milking season, and suggesting that <he camps should be held in the late autumn. The Minister for Defence has been prompt in his reply, and his answer is to the ffeeet that arrangements have been made to hold camps during the four moiiths February-May, and even into June, if necessary. Employers arc requested to consult local defence officers •regarding the dates on which they can best afford to allow their workers to proceed to camp.
