T.URF TOPICS. (T3y "Moturoa."' The Taranaki Jockey Club added another record this week to the steady string of successes which have been a noticeable feature since Mr. E. P. Webster took up the reins of management, and the result is a credit to that painstaking gentleman, and to those who assisted in making the gathering such a successful one. Jo the first place Mr, Geo. Morse's weights gave every satisfaction, as shown by the splendid fields seen, out each day. Mr. C. O'Connor r-tartcd in his best style, and Mr. W. !I, Hartgil! sized up the many close finishes to everybody's satisfaction. The weather was fortunately good, and the course in line order. The many minor items, such as catering, management of booths, etc., were carefully attended to, and the crowds that attended each day voted it a most enjoyable gathering, The. only drawback, from the public's point of view, was that winners were hard to pick. The handicapper had all the best of the deal each day. In handicap events not a single favorite won the first day, while on Thursday only two were successful.

1 Despite nn invasion of ''foreign" . horses, the majority of the stakes were

jTere's Cup victory was well deserved. but there was a streak of luck about Sunbird's sensational win in the Paul | Memorial Handicap. Simple Sam, Cora Ora, Henry Clay, Kins Shimose, Grey Guard, Revocation, Iceberg, and Sylvia Becdie all won in good style, ' and amongst the lot Cora Ora, Grey Guard, and Revocation stand out as very promising horses. "Foreign'-" jnvaders had 'the Taranaki Stakes to themselves, and after a pretty race Estland defeated Bimeter and Kystad very decisively. At Hawera last week the two-year-old bad the outside running, and was then defeated by a head. On Thursday ■ Estland drew'the rails, and the ground saved thereby made all the difference between victory and delaet. There was no shadow of inconsistency in the two performances. Both Nystad and Bimeter ran up to their best form, and the honors certainly go to the older horse, who was penalised for recent victories, and had to concede a maiden allowance to Estland as well.

Previous winners of the Stakes were: 10U5, ,Siv Geo. Clifford's Flying Start, 7.7 (W. Bell), time 1.15; 1010, Mr. G. D. Greenwood's Emperador, 0.0 (H. Hatch), time 1.U4-5. Holland's time was 1.13 3-5.

Toa Tore's fine form in the Cup was the best lie has shown in the Dominion. On the "other side'' lie won several good handicaps over ten furlongs, hut it is doubtful if he met anything in 'Stralia or' the calibre of Depredation, Rewi P'oto and Co. Congratulations to Mr. Jas. Hawkins!

There were at least- half a dozen horses that appeared to have a chance at the turn for home in the Paul Memorial Handicap, and punters were calling the names of Lady Penury, Housewife, Master Lupin, Sunbird, ilushman, Paraoa, etc. There was a groat struggle for positions as they 'turned into the straight, and Sunbird got the opening, while Lady Penury got tile bump! Housewife was ''snowed in,".and Master Lupin had to come round. Deeley rode Sunbird right out, and the mare just struggled on long endugh 'to score from Master Lupin, -wlio came very fast, Lady Penury and a bunched lot' following. It was a great race, and a great exhibition of horsemanship on Deeley'.? part. The list of winning owners at the Taranaki meeting is as follows:—J. Hawkins £-130. and gold cup valuer! at £SO, T. 11.
