POSITION OF CUSTOMS OFFICERS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 8. At the Military Appeal Board tlu Comptroller of Customs appealed on behalf ,of three Customs officers, all examiners. He stated that they had to be very highly skilled. Out of a .staff of 5S in August, 1914, 48 had been allowed to go, and the clerical staff had been reduced from 55 to 30, and the cadets from 30 to 33. Senior officers had been replaced by cadets. The revenue had increased 'from £3,492,000 to over four million, entailing a considerable increase in work. Asked by the chairman as to the possibility of closing some of the ports, the Comptroller said he had thought of it, but was afraid it would cause a political upheaval. The appeals were adjourned till May 1, when they will he re-heard. 'Temporary exemption was granted.
