EDUCATION BOARD.
ASSISTANT SECRETARYSHIP. MEMBER OF BOARD APPOINTED. At a-committee meeting of the Taranaki 'Education Board yesterday, the Rev. A. B. Chappell was appointed to tlie position of assistant secretary to the Board, at a salary of £3OO. Mr. Chappell, who had been a member of the Board, tendered his resignation just prior to the meeting, and was not in attendance. Seventy-three applications for the position were received, and this number was reduced to six at the January meeting of tlie Board. Mr. Chappell is a Methodist minister, and for tlie past three years has been in charge of the Whitele.v Memorial Church, New Plymouth. Mr. Chappell is a native of Portsmouth, England, and is 40 years of age. TTe is a Master of Arts of the University of New Zealand, having passed vith honors in political science, those honors including the highest results yet gained in economics in the University, viz., 87 per cent. He is an honors-man and an exhibitioner of the Canterbury (University) College in mental-science (psychology, logic, ethics, and history of philosophy), a course demanding a thorough knowledge of the subjects fundamental in education. Ho is also a Fellow of the Royal Economic Society. For many years Mr. Chappell lias been a member of School Committees, as well as a member of Technical School and High School Committees. He was a member of the Council of the Graduates' Association of Canterbury College, and took a share in the work of Convocation. For fifteen years Mr. Chappell has been annually elected secretary of the Dominion Representative Assembly of the Church to which he belongs. He has had experience in bookkeeping and accounting, and lias pursued political science studies, ■with special attention to research work in economics. Hp is familiar with financial statements and tables, and has had wide experience of trust board chairmanships. His teaching experience includes work in Auckland secondary schools and tutorial classes in Christchurch, while he taught junior public service pupils at the continuation classes in the Wanganui Technical College. He has also been engaged lor many years in private coaching, and for fifteen years has been examiner of literary and mathematical papers for various colleges. On accepting the position, Mr. Chappell will, it is understood, relinquish the charge of Whiteley Church.
