BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
ENGINEER'S REPORT. The borough engineer (Sir. W. H. Cook), reporting to the 'Works Committee of the Borougli Council on Monday evening, stated that in regard to Paynter's Lane the formation along Mr. Grilliths' frontage was just about completed. The metalled portion had had preliminary rolling, and the kerning had been laid from Devon street to the railway bridge. Wallace Place.—Prom Tukaj.a road, the roadway had been scarilied and resurfaced, and the sides would be metalled during- the present month. Standish .Hill.—The lowering and regrading was all but completed, and the bottom coat of inctal was now being spread. Dawson Street.—The length between Vivian and Full'ord streets had been scarified, re-surfaced and rolled. From Fulford to Vivian streets the re-surfac-ing metal had been laid, and the tarring would be pub in hand when the weather takes up. Devon Street East.—A start had been I made to re-tar the surface, the! north side being tarred from Hobson street, to Ileiuii bridge. Tar Well. —The site of the well had been chosen on Council property at the Lemon street yard, and the excavation had been completed except for the valve well, which was now under way and would soon be finished. Puketi Reserve.—The cutting of gorse in this reserve was nearly completed. A considerable amount of grubbing had yet to be done. Cemetery.—A fire caused some damage to several fences, but cleaned up a lot of undergrowth and other rubbish. The engineer said lie had issued instructions generally that no tires were to be made during the hot dry weather no! when high winds 'were blowing. Waterworks. —No. 1 filter was again in working order and was reported by the caretaker to be now filtering as much as Nos. 2 and .1 together. The walls had been erected, the filter raised two feet, new connections made, and all cups had been thoroughly cleaned. The concrete platform had heen extended, and the filter painted internally. Services. —Twelve new services had been laid and two had been taken from cxistinc services. Twelve new flushing services had been installed. The service had been extended to Messrs. Brayshaw's and Todd's, Rophia street, 1000 ft %in pipe being laid. SANITATION. The sanitary inspector (Mr. R. Day) reported that during the month he had devoted some attention to the clearing of the Mangotuku stream. A start had been made by some of the propertyowners who had received notice to clear the obstructions. The discharging of house water into street'channels was being stopped, and the most 3erious nuisances were abated. There were several places polluting the bathing water at Te lrnnui which must be rectified in a few days. During the month he had fumigated three lots of second-hand beddina'and clothing, and had condemned •23 cases of fruit. Some trouble had been experienced in the sanitary part of the work, and two new men had to be engaged. Given a few days, the service would be quite satisfactory.
