Morison presided at a meeting of the Stratford branch of the Farmers' Union, held on Saturday afternoon. Some discussion ensued on the question of the Defence Department holding Territorial parades at this time of the .year. It was decided that a letter be forwarded to the Minister for Defence, protesting against the holding of Territorial camps during the milking season Owing to the shortage of labor, fanners are depending or. their sons to assist in farm work. If the camps were held later in the year the rush of work on farms would be over, and the absence of Territorials would then not be felt so severely by farmers. Another question discussed was that referring to so many farmers being called up for active service. It was felt that the numbers were becoming so large that the value of farms would bo lessened through curtailment of output A letter is to be forwarded to the executive of the Taranaki Farmers" Union, protesting against farmers being called up for active service. • Mr. Morison was elected delegate to the Provincial Council of the Taranaki Farmers' Union. Mr. A. D. Stanley..was elected secretary, vice Mr. E. 11. Linnell, resigned: Mr. R. Masters, treasurer; and Mr. J. H. Thompson, auditor. The next meeting will be held in March, as the union's financial year ends in April. GENERAL. The takings at the tea rooms on Saturday totalled £3 3s, anil the Red Cross Orfart —very good figures, considering the web weather prevailing. The ladies are holding their monthly meeting to-morrow afternoon. Twelve recruits were farcwelled nt the railway station this morning. Appropriate speeches were made by the Mayor (Mr. J. \V. Boon) and the Rev. .1. Dawson Madill. The names of the departing soldiers arc: —G. Speight, A. Brown, L. P. fetch, I. Jones, F. Uanagbein, A. J. Burr, J. Orr, W. S. Syme, A. G. Cartwright, A. Smith, J. L. Brown, and J. C. Swadling. The Medical Board sat hero to-day, and during the morning the police were directing examinees to headquarters, Foresters' UaiL Rcgaii Street. Then;
were probably -10 men lined up for examination within an hour of the opening of the proceedings. Six rinks of bo-wlcrs arc expected here from llawora on Wednesday for the banner championship games. Where there's smoke there's fire, and where there's smoke there's pleasure, provided always the smoker knows what he is reducing to ashes.
