He was admitted to, ' a private hospital a month ago, suffer-. - . ing from a minor trouble, and nude such good progress under treatment that at the end of a week 'he was able, to take a motor drive. Subsequently his condition flucr tuated from, day to day, tout it neves was entirely satisfactory, and a week ago his friends were apprehensive ot the worst result. He showed a slight; ,■ improvement on Saturday morning, buij be was worse again towards the even* ing, and at 10 o'clock he passed quietly) away. Naturally there is too much genuine) , regret among Dr. MeNab's colleagues in the Cabinet to allow them to discus* in any detail the probable effect of hi* death upon the political situation. Tk>, doctor was acting-leader of the Liberal . Party during the absence of Sir Jbaepbi Ward, but in this position he had asto>i ciated himself with Mr. Macßonald and 1 Mr. Myers, and doubtless these two> gentlemen will continue to discharge "r the not very orierous duties of the office* under the arrangement made between the parties when the Nations! Govern. ment was formed. The Reformers wiU , oiler no official opposition to the Liberal candidate nominated. to till thai vacancy in the representation ofi Hawke's Bay, and, presumably, it W M vest with Sir Joseph Ward to name tke new member of the Cabinet to the Minister of Justice. In this cen« ncct.ioii the names of Mr. Forbes, Mr, Buddo, Mr. Sidey, and Mr. Veitch alt . , ready have been mentioned, but the geographical considerations which enter largely into such matters may lead to ' preference being gfven to a North Island member. •,; Arrangements for the funeral are no* yot definitely settled, but to-night there) js some talk of it taking place near th« deceased Minister's old home in thej, ; South.
