Mr. mid Mrs. F. S. Johns returned on Tuesday niglit from Australia. Mr. T. Buxton, er-M.P. for Temnka, was a passenger to New Plymouth by, the. mail train last night. The Rev. Dr. .T. Kelly, who has bent parish priest at Opnnako during the pust couple of years has received nelace oi transfer to Duncdin. News Ims been received that Dr. A. K. Newman, M.P. for Wellington KmC, has reached San Francisco on his return journey to New Zealand. Ho will arrive here about the end of February. Mr. T. f). Bnrrcl!, electrical enginser ti the Mang'-iwcku Town Board, has been appointed electrical engineer to the borough of Waitava. It was previously stated in error that another applicant had been successful. A Wellington telegram states that the Victoria Cross, won by Private Thomas Cook, formerly of Wellington. and a member of the Australian Force, was presented to his widow yesterday; by the Governor. Mr. and Mrs. 'Moosman, of Lake Road, ITawcrn, received word yesterday from the Minister of Defence that their son, Private L. J. Moosman, has been missin;; since October 3, lfllO, and is now believed to have been killed. A recent hospital progress report con. tainii the following:—Still seriously ill: Private .T. Douglas Perrctt, the well-, known artist, is at present visiting Sew Plymouth, where he is engaged in sketching' We understand that ft aWe of some of his works of art will shortly, take place here. Mr. C. A. Jeffery, private secretary to the Hon. Arthur Myers (Minister for Customs and Munitions), who until recently has been unable to pass the medical test, lias now keen passed as/ fit for active service, and goes into camp with the 27th Reinforcements on March 0. Mr. Graham, who has been acting temporarily as postmaster at Eltham since the first of this month, has received notification from the Department ot his appointment permanently to the position. It was previously announced. that Mr. J. E. Broadfoot was appointed to the position, hut since then there has been a rearrangement in appointments. Amongst the soldiers who recently **" turned to New Zialand was Corptrat Lindsay Shand, who went away with the Ninth Reinforcements. , Corppral Shand, who haile from the Hokitika district, where he was employed before he enlisted, as a linotype operator, was wounded in the aim about six months ago, during the severe fighting at Aimentiercs. Ho had been several fwidis in the firing line before getting wounded He was in danger of losing the injt.rcd limb, but the medical staff at the hospital where he was quartered in France decided to try and save it, stating however, that the experiment was the first of the kind which they had («. that hospital attempted. A nerve wa* taken from the amputated arm of a comrade and inserted in Corporal Phand's arm, with such good result* that he is now able to use the limb, though it is, of course, not yet very strong. Surgeon-General Mackin, bead of the British Army Mediqal Corps, pronounced the experiment a surpriHina success. The corporal was not allowed to leave the French hospital until hii wound hod almost healed, and B»,"nt only a short time at Brockcnhnrst' and other hospitals where there are colonials in England.
