STRATFORD.
[Alt communications, letters, etc., I<*ft with Mr. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] (From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, January 30. The first month of 1317 lias been dry —too dry for many. But there you are! Naturally stock is showing the effects of the dry pastures, and the paddocks around hero present an unusually drab aspect. Dealers who thrive on buying ami selling stock are losing their enthusiasm for the work, evidently preferring to hold off whilst the sun shines. The value of the Technical College as a means of securing practical instruction in engineering work is little understood in t'his' district. This neglect will soon be remedied, as Masters and Son are preparing their window for a display of the work done at the classes in New Plymouth controlled by -Messrs Kirkpat riclc and Skclton. The writer has seen much of the work done and can vouch for the general excellence of the completed article. Farmers and others with boys showing a partiality for engineering should make a point of tarefully inspecting the exhibits. Enrolments are «itill coming to 'hand. Tis a pity the need exists, but, when necessity calls, duty must be done. The latest recruits to line up for judgment the doctor—are A. L. Kivell, Skinner road, and W. H. Johnston, Ka-ho-ari bridge. Scrgt.-Major Mahoney ami Mr. C. 1). Sole are ever ready to enrol more members, in the Dominion Armv.
An incident was related (o me concerning the late camp at aiig:;nui. Three of the returned Anzaes started ■'throwing oft"' at some of the stall' oDicers. Some feeling was shown, and the commissioned ollkers arc to be commended for the admirable manner in which thev controlled themselves under trying circumstances. It is surprising that some of the ClallipoH boys should behave like this, as there is no desire on the part of the stall qllieers to remain behind. Par rather would they be at the front, but the Defence Department requires their services here. Probably the Anzaes have cooled down by this, and regret that they endeavored to create a scene that would have reflected no credit on them had the stall' ollicers accepted the invitation and "rolled into it." The lirst banner match in South Tarariaki will, 1 understand, be decided on the Stratford bowling green on Wednesday, February 7. The games will be played between rinks from Hawera and Stratford A welcome donation of £5 13s has been received by Captain Campion for the Salvation Army funds in connection with the Expeditionary Forces, from the Cardiff Dairy Company.
We all wish to possess nothing but tho best. Sometimes we are successful, but frequently disappointed. There is no disappointment awaiting the pure-baser of goods at C. E. James' warehouse. Just note tho \ sterling value offering in Doulton ware.*
