STRATFORD.

[All communications, letters, etc., lett ■with Mr. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] ( (From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, January 2i). The Nga-erc ladies, headed by Mrs.'T. Coleman, had control of the Ladies' ■Patriotic Committee's Red Cross t Mart and tea-rooms on Saturday. ' The amount taken at both rooms totalled £ls, a very good sum. On .Saturday, February 24, the Beaconsfield road ladies arc to have charge, the Misses Sangstcr and Faultier undertaking arrangements. The Saturdays in /the interval will be filled by the local committee. The Mayoress welcomes any assistance, so 'probably the Midhirst, Toko and Douglas ladies may institute a Saturday iinder their respective control. Tarnnaki wants rain badly, and Stratford, although in the rain belt, is finding the drought something more tr-aii a nuisance. Tn many instances swamps which have hitherto always contained moisture are now quite dry. Farmers. engaged" in fencing also report that the soil two and three feet down is as dry as the surface. There arc very few farms that can boast of a good water supply, and carting water is not unknown on some farms. General sympathy waa expressed to Mr. and Mrs. Ilarry Masters at the loss of their two-year-old son. The little chap had not been well lately, but the end was not anticipated so soon. The funeral took place this afternoon.

Mr. R. Masters, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, is.addressing a meeting at Waitara this evening on school matters, particularly regarding the setting up of classes for manual instruction there.

Staff Sergcant-Major Mahoney, of Stratford, and other Taranaki officers, who have been in camp at Wanganui for several days, returned home tins afternoon.

We all wish to possess nothing but tho best. Sometimes we are successful, frequently disappointed. There is no disappointment awaiting the purchaser of goods at C. E. James' warehouse. Just note the sterling value offering in Doulton ware.*
