BOROUGH COUNCIL.

WORKS COMMITTEE, The Works Committee of the yew Plymouth Borough Council met tot evening. The Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) presided, and others present were:— Crs. L. M. Monteath, J. S. S. Medley, J W Havden. F. E. Wilson, A.,H. Johnstone, W. A. Ci.llis. W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, S. .7. Smith, E. Griffith, J. T. Mannix, and A.. E. Watkins.

Discussion took place relative to the reconstruction oJ Carrington Road. The engineer submitted a report estimating the cost of the work at £972 7s. This estimate provided for the formation of ae average width of 60ft., IB chains from Courtenay Street, £048; metalling 25ft. wide, 10 chains Gin., deep: a path on one side; rolling, blinding, lengthening culverts, scarifying old metal, and blasting rock. The questnn whether the road should bo raised nnd levelled was discussed.

A deputation consisting of Messrs C. E. Bellringer, C. Carter, and Newton King waited on the Council and asked that the corner of the Carrington Road be widened in order to obviate the danger that exists there at present. A knoll near Mr. Chohvill's gate should aiso be removed.

Cr. Johnstone suggested that the cupnecr, in reporting further on the work, should have .*ei,<ard to future maintenance and the suitability of the road for a tram track in 'the event of the ratepayers of Vogcltown being desirous of an "extension of the tram servico in the future.

The Council resolved: "That the plans or' the. Carrington Road be referred hack lo the borough engineer to submit a report and estimate, with the grsd.>'< modified to utilise as far as possible the rcat'.way as at present constructed; n.ne, also to submit a report and estimates fir widening and improving the Carringlon Road at its junction with Pendanes Street and Victoria Road and swell portion of Victoria Road as he may dec™ l'fcessary." Mr. G. H. Bnllard, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Taranaki, repotted having found that the closed portion of Holdsworthy Road did not belong to the borough. The writer asked whether the Council objected to the land being formally made a part of the I'urk. It was agreed to allow the area to be vested in the Pukckiira Park trustees. In regard to Mr. A. Weller's reqne.-t that a drain he constructed so as lo divert the stovm water from his section at Fitzroy, the engineer recommended Ike work at a cost of £lO 17s.— Adopted.
