HAWERA CLUB. ■Hawera green -was beflagged on Saturday afternoon in honor of Haj wcra's win at the tournament, and the [ president (Mr. W. A. Parkinson), on behalf of the club, took occasion' to congratulate the winners of the shield at the Taranaki tournament. The whole team—M. Rudkin (lead), A. IT. Hodge (No. 2), W. Robertson (No. 3) and J. Foy (skip)—deserved praise for the stubborn fight they put up against the best bowlers in the province, both in section play and in Wie semi-finals and final. They had been beaten once during the tournament, and that by a rink from the youngest club in Taranaki fOkato); but the loss of that one game had done them no harm, and |Suen incidents encouragement Tto new clubs such as the Okato players. Mr. G. Syme (vice-president) also congratulated the winners. It was not the first time Hawera had won- the shield, and he believed it would not be the last. Ho roferred to the starting of the Hawera Club, of which he was one of the few original members still in the district. At that time the nearest outside club's were at Wanganui to tlie south and New Plymouth to the north; but there were clubs all around us now, and an interchange of visits was qnito an easy matter. "By the by," continued Mr. Syme, "most of you may not be aware that the Hawera Olub this vear has attained its majority, and the winning of the shield at this .particular time is a fitting commemoration of that event. I knew something was going to happen this year, and it hos!"
Three cheers' were then given for the winners.
Mr. Foy briefly replied on behalf of 'himself and N the other members of the team. He thanked those presant for their hearty congratulations, and said they certainly felt proud of their win. One thing he would like to say was that the whole of the team had pulled well together, and he attributed their victory largely to this-fact. It was a strenuous time, but they had enjoyed the various contests to the utmost.
The challenge buttons changed hands on Saturday, the holders (Graham, J. Hicks. McNiven and Curtis) being defeated by McLaren, Black, Craibb and Grant bv 23 to 13. The first banner match this season in the southern division is fixed for Wednesday week, when Hawera and Stratford are. scheduled to play a sixrink game.—Star.
