Tlio. first twd acts of "The Pawn of Kate;" are in a genuine high comedy spirit that sparkles continuously with that spirit of vivacipus entertainment sadly lacking in most screen stories, and tliese lead up gradually to'the more dramatic scenes later in the play, which evolves itself into a consistent and poetic tragedy of two lives, Which by a peculiar dramatic twist turns out happily in the finish. P'crre Dufrene and his pretty wife are living in a state of perfect happiness in a little Normandy village; Pierre amuses himself with drawing sketches of his wife mid her friends, and the different animals 011 Jie farm. He is not by any mean.-' an artist, hut lie finds enjoyment in his crude pictures. To the farm comes a celebrated Parisian artist, Lftssalle, who sees :P'ierrc's beautiful wife, and at once marks her for his prey. The concluding scenes of the story show Pierre having his revenge. These .Scenes are intensely dramatic; they , result in the death of Lassalle, hut before he dies he exonerates Pierre's wife, and the play has n happy ending. Other films on the same programme are: "Observing for British Big duns," "Winter Scones in Sweden," "fiamnont War Graphic," and "Kernel Knut Wins a Wife," an amusing Frank Daniels comedy.
