OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent). The public school picnic was held on the beach on Wednesday. A verv large number of children were present, also a number of adults. Tile committee worked assiduously to make tlie day a pleasant one, and were ably assisted by parents.

At the Magistrate's Court on Thursday, before- Mi' t A. Crooke, S.M., a sliaremilking case took up the greater part of the morning. A. Williamson claimed from Thos. Fleming the sum of £2l 10s for work not specified during the milking season. Plaintiff had been sharemilking for defendant- on the ktter's farm, Ivina road. The first year the parties had a written agreement, but in the second and third years there wjis no written agreement. A clause stipulated that plaintiff was to stump and dean five acres of land And sow same down before December 20. In the second year plaintiff stated in evidence that lie was ordered nof to stump and plough, and was given draining to do, and splitting posts and battens. This work was done and claimed for. The defence was that the work was to be done in lieu of the ploughing and stumping and other work up' to the value of £2O. It was eontended that ns t'iie same system was applied in the second year of tbe sharemilking arrangement, it was an established custom. Mr. Donald McGregor, one oF Opunake's best-known early settlers, died at his son-in-law's (Mr. Smart's) residence at Hawera on Thursday morning, aged 03. A few years ago deceased was a strong man, working on his farm on the Waitino road. -Some twelve years ago he relinquished his blaeksmithing business for farming. During his residence in Opunake he took an interest in local «JTairs, having been for several years a member of iilie Opunake Town Board, also for a period chairman, a member of the Cemetery Trustee Board and other minor societies. About twelve months ago deceased underwent a serious operation and improved in health, but three months ago lie had a relapse,and little hope was held out by his medical advisers for his recovery.
