SOLD OVEP-PROOF MEDICINE. An unusual case was heard befoW t Mr. A .Crooke, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday when a grocer of Ra- • hotii, Thomas ?. Hughson (Mr. A. A. Eenrett) pleaded guilty to a charge of selling a, bottle of medicated wine containing more than 10 per cent, of ovenproof spirit without being licensed. Senior Sergeant Bowden said a young man bought a bottle of the wine from > defendant, and after drinking it, be-cr-.me intoxicated. On an analysis be-' iiig made, the preparation was found to • contain SO per cuit. of over-proof spirit. The defendant had been very frank in bis statements to the .police. Giving evidence thq defendant sail he had obtained die -amsdicated wine from J. C. Shailand and Co., Auckland, sb. months ago. It was sold as quinine wine, a tonic and strengthening medicine. He had no knowledge of the ana* lytioal properties of the preparation until the police called and took samples. To the Court: Slmrland's Hvas one of t.'ic tiinst reputable wholesale firms in New Zealand. The Magistrate described defendant as an innocent offender, and fined him the minimum penalty, £l, without costs. Defendant was ordered to pay 10s Gd, analyst's fee.
