BOWLING CARNIVAL.
TWELFTH TARANAKI TOUBNAAIEXT. Successful opening. • T')e twelfth annual bowling tournament held under the auspices of the Taranaki Centre commenced on the three New 'Plymouth Clubs' greens yesterday and promises to he cr|ually as successful as any of its predecessors. Forty-four rinks have entered, representing every club under the jurisdiction of tlie Centre, whilst additional interest is added by the presence of representatives of outside clubs from Wangamii and Palmerston North. The opening day was favored ~'itli beautiful weather, and some good bowling was shown, through perhaps on the whole the standard was hardly up to last year's opening day. Tlris perhaps was due to the fact that bowlers have become accustomed to keen greens during the recent spell of dry weather, and the rain of the previous night to some extent deadened the surface, especially early in the morning. Still, this wore off as the day advanced, and indications were not lacking that some interesting plav will be seen before finality, is reached. All things- considered, the greens were in good order, and reflect credit on the attention paid to them by the respective custodians, Messrs, Revell (New U'lymouth), Ward (Fitzroy), and R. Soie (West End). The arrangements for the tournament were again very complete, the secretary (Mr. 0. N. Firth) and the executive having attended faithfully to every detail that makes for success.
The bowlers competing assembled at the New Plymouth green yesterday morning frior to the commencement J of play, and were warmlv welcomed by the president of the Xew Plymouth Club (Mr. M. Eraser), 'who also expressed the liope that the tournament would prove an enjoyable one, and that the harmony which usually prevailed would continue throughout. Mr. W. A. Parkinson (president of the Centre) endorsed these remarks, and observed that in a sense this was a war tournament. They hoped to make their contribution to the patriotic funds, as' the result of the tournament, as substantial as possible, and, therefore, if the hospitality extended to tbe visitors hardly reached the usual standard they would, he was quite sure, understand and appreciate the position. He referred to the fact that a number of bowlers were on active service, and expressed the hope that those who were unable to go to the front would, in their different spheres, do their duty here. Ho made special reference to tho fact that Mr. Harrop, of the Pihama Club, had made the supreme sacrifice, and was sure that his father and mother had the sympathy of all bowlers in their bereavement. I-Ic intimated that the privileges of the Xew Plymouth Club in Devon Street would be open to all visiting bowlers during the tournament, and concluded by offering congratulations to Mr. H. Smart and his rink upon tho excellent showing made in the Dominion tournament at Wellington. Bowlers would have been particularly delighted to have seen the Dominion banner hanging in the pavilion of the Xe>v Plymouth Club, and he expressed the hope that it may come to Taranaki another vear. .
There were some vsr.v exciting and elope finishes, many of the games being decided on the very last bowl. The um° pires at the respective greens were •Messrs. W. F. Brooking (New Plymouth), A. S. Brooker (Fitzroy), and Beal (West- End). Afternoon tea was dispensed on each green by the ladies-, and was greatly appreciated, and should add considerably to the patriotic fund proceeds.
