TURF TOPICS.
(By "Mpturoa")
During tin s week sportsmen will have any amount of racing to engage their attention. The Wellington meeting opened on Saturday and will be continued to-day and Wednesday. The Foxton annual gathering takes place today and to-morrow, and the Takapuna summer meeting on Saturday and Monday Good fields should face the starters at these gatherings, though Taranaki horses have not been entered in any considerable number, being reserved for the Egmont and Taranaki meetings to follow.
The Foxton meeting will see C'oropet, Zotes, Syntax, Iceberg, and possibly one or two other Taranaki horses in action The Cup has drawn a good field of fourteen, and the favorites appear to be Dribble, Wapping and Bronk Delaval. The last named has only to run up to I'cikliug form to show up well. In th? minor events Kurapai, Coropet. Syntax, May Morn and Zetes should also have strong followings.
Mr. Geo. Morse's weights for the Egmont meeting will appear early this week. The Wangauui handicappev's nx.ny friends will be pleased to hear that hir. health was much improved by the northern trip. As a number of horses claiming engagements a.t the Taranaki and Egmont meetings are engaged ut Trcntham Mr. Morse went through to Wellington yesterday. It is interesting' to note that Mr. V. Dorset, owner of Red Ribbon, dons the King's khaki next month. Croesus is in commission again, and i« being given beach work at Napier, which looks as if the Steward's Handicap winner is not too sound in his "pins."
Mention of unsound horses remind* n'c of a tale told by a sportsman recently returned from ihcMCawakawn mee',infr. There was en old-timer- there that had been "patched up" very carefully by his Maori owner, though the animal's appearance savored more of the show ring than the racecourse. "How's the old horse standing?" inquired a guesser. "Oh, hit feet are kapni, but his pukn no goct. Too mnch like te draught mare/' replied the Maori. Anyhow the horse won. Pieproached by the disgusted guesser afterwards the Maori oxplained, "Py cony, t'at hors.e, he te piankv liar He only got te wind, I tink!" J At the conclusion of the Auckland Cup meeting the Kllendie racecourse was occupied for a week by the Seventh Day Adventist? It is to be hoped they didn't pick up too many inadvertently lpsfc totq tickets pn winners 1
