CHAIRMAN'S ANNUAL REPORT, Gentlemen In placing before you the account of the board for the year 101 li, I regret to report a slight decrease in the trade of the port, the total quantity of cargo handled being i)0,10S tons, against IK. 107 tons in 1015. a decrease of lfl'.tO tons. The imports fell by I:JSp tons, anil the exports filO tons The latter was caused entirely by the non-shipment <i» the dairy produce 'owing to the shortage of steamers, otherwise there would have been a fairly substantial increase. The revenue for the year was £11.50") ISs <!d, against £ll, BO" us 3d in 1013, a decrease of £lOl (is lid. The working account shows i» licit profit of £7O-IS 10s !)d, against £«">>". LOAiN ACCOUNT. During the year the balance of the loan, amounting to £23,000, was raised at par at 5 per cent., which considering the state, of the money market, was on very favorable terms. As mentioned in my' last report, the credit for raising this loan was due to the board's treasurer, Mr. Newton King. , ■ The balance of the account at Decembe 31, 1010, was £19,002 Vn lfld, all of which is on fixed deposit at the board's bankers.
BREAKWATER PROTECTION'. Once again I have to report that this work has stood splendidly, and only in one or two place; lias the work required to be made up Seven concrete blocks, from sleek have been used during the year, and the cost has been £2O 7a. DRLDGE "PARITUTU." During the year this vessel has. been engaged in the fairway and swinging basin, most of the time with her buckets. Further improvement has been made, in the depths of water ,and there is now no difficulty in berthing the ocean liners. Frozen meat will, be available for shipment at an early date, as the new meat freezing works at Smart Rood are practically completed, and slaughtering commenced on January 14. The spoil removed during the year by this vessel was '210.4110 tons, at a total cos. of £7582 10s Id (which'amount includes the oust of the annual overhaul at Wellington), giving an average cost, of 7.98 d per top. During the past six years this vessel has removed, in deepening the harbor, a total quantity of 1,400,2.">0 tons of spoil. BUILDINGS, PLANT ANE MACHINERY. During the year £770 13s 5d has been, expended under this heading, included in which is a new shed on the wharf, 58ft x 25ft, costing about £3OO, for the storage of hawsers and an office for the harbormaster. Sales of plant and material during the year amounted to £152 0s Id. ENDOWMENTS.
During the year 'fourteen sections at (lie Kiuvau Pa Reserve have been let. and there are now only throe remaining to be disposed of in this block. Ho far, no further sections in Mt. Eliot Reserve have been let. During the year the board leased :2b acres of the reserve near Paritntu to the New Zealand Iron Ore Smutting and Manufacturing Company, who are now busy erecting buildings and plant on the . site' for the purpose of smelting the iron- . sand which lies on the board's foreshore. ; This industry will be of immense import- • ance to the board and the whole of New Zealand, and I feel sure every member of the board wil) wish the qompany every success in its undertaking. Being a decrease of 20 vessels, and of in tonnage, and a decrease of 1909' tons in imports and exports. LAND REVENUE. I have great'pleasure in reporting a furthpr increase in the receipts for land revenue during the year, the figures being £7032 17s 4d for 1910, against £O22S 17? Sd in 1913, the increase being £1423 19s Sd. This is the largest amount received in one year since IS9O. ' . .LAND REVENUE. Table of land revenue for the past sixteen years:— LAND REVENUE.
SINKING FUND, 1909 LOAN. The balance in this account" at December 31, 1910. was £24,050 4s 7d, of which £23,5(10 was on mortgage, and the balance at the Board's bankers. MEMBERS.
