Among the many records of merit in connection with military service is that of the family of. Mr T.'.E. Sinel, a welllknown figure in Auckland shipping cice'es. In all there are six sons on neti\B service, and a poventh volunteered., but failed to qualify, fAmong the number are two who uro returning to the front for the second time. Major W. C. Sind left with the Main Body with rank oj enptain. and was for 4* month* on Onllipoli, being twice wounded Corporal E. •I. Sine! was a member of the Sainoan I.xpeditionary Force, nnd later saw aorviee on Rallipoli, where ho was woundid in July. Both mentioned were invalided homo, and Major Sine! is to command the 21st Reinforcements.'
Admiral Dewey, whose death was i'-> coiitly reported, was born in December, 18.'<7. He was commanding lieutenant of the steam sloop Mississippi, of tlia West Gulf Squadron, in 18(11; in Admiral ■Tiimqufn Squadron, which forced tlio pas«.-nn o of Fort St. Philip and Fort Jackson in 1802; and participated in the attack on fort St. Philip and the subsequent fights with gunboats and ironclads which pave Farrngut possession of New Orleans. He afterwards nerved on si'v- , er'tl vessels in the North Atlantic blockading squadron, and then in the European squadron. In 1808 he was in coni-H.nn-1 of the Asiatic Kqmulron, and wai at Hongkong when war broke out between the United States and Spain. He \.us sent for, and ordered to "capture or destroy the Spanish fleet,'' then in Philippic' waters. On May Ist he overwhelmingly defeated the Spanish flett ii.der Admiral Montojo in Manila toy, a victory won .without the loss of a man on (lie American ships. He destroyed eleven enemy ships and captured- the *« others, besides all the land batteries. ll<- was then Commodore, but was promoted to Boar-Admiral, and later was made Admiral, that title, formerly only borne by Farragut and Porter, having been revived by Act of Congress.
