AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY.
-■ «a» CHANCELLOR'S ADDRESS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Jan. 17. At the meeting of the . University Senate the Chancellor said that students were necessarily affected by the war and it was surprising that the cdllegcs were so well attended. Discussing the entrance examinations he said; "We cannot delegate to another body the function cast upon the university by the statute. Tf tlu university is not to undertake the examination of those who desire to become its students it seems better to mo that the university should be abolished.'' In reference to leaving certificates he said: "Our university does not require: more than five subjects. There is, however, a danger of commencing specialisation in leaving too early I think such specialisation should be discouraged"
The Chancellor uttered a warning as to the eilect of financial stringency ari«ing from the war on education expendituie. He said it was their duty to maintain the present system in all its vigor and efficacy and to see there was no waste of resources. Another mattei under this head was overlapping. Were not technical schools performing primary school work? Were secondary schools performing unive.sity work? This was a matter . requiring consideration by the Senate., In reference to scientific education the Chancellor suggested the possibility of reviving the proposal submitted to Pa.liiiment in 18S7 that the scientific work of various Covernment departments should lie put under one control and utilised for research purposes. The suggestion was that there should be started in Wellington a University College with special development in science. He did not 3ee why this could not be done, and the scientific department perform general research work without any additional cost to the State.
