ELTHAM.

(By Our Travelling Reporter). Air. A. J. Chjng, who has been clerk of the Court here for a number of years, leaves shortly for Laurence. His successor is Mr. Freeman, from Auckland. Mr. G. W. Bennett, stationmaster, has returned and resinned his duties. Although having a long spell through illness, the last few weeks spent on tbe beach at Turakina has considerably improved him, and he is looking very well. This he attributes to the first dietflounders for breakfast, dinner and tea. The sunshine and the sea breeze lias helped his along considerably. Mr. 11. J. Barnard, sr -tary of the Eltham Dairy Company, informs me that the company has 3800 crates of cheese stored at New Plymouth and 1400 crates at Eltham, the agregate value being £35,000. The Kia Ora and Laiund shipments were-sufficient to cover the December pay-outs by the banks. A sft 4in specimen of humanity nanvjd Harvey hit Eltham on Saturday. He arrived from Wanganui and promptly made himself a nuisance. Late at night he "caroled" the' streets but luckily tin: neighbors were asleep. The songster used some vile language and he was plac- ! <k] in durance vile by Constable Townsed. On Monday he was charged jefore Mr. E. Parrott, J.P., with drunkenness and using obscene language. He was convicted and fined 10s on the first charge and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment on tli.' second charge, thu Bench holding the opinion that as the hour was late defendant's conduct was not so so bad as had it been daylight with women and children around. The ivrittr has been informed that Harvey is one of those individuals who rarely enjoys liberty. He had only been discharged from the Wanganui gaol that morning, leaving those quarters with 15s in his possession. Part of this was swallowed up in train fares and the remainder swallowed up in beer. It may be remarked that Harvey gained some notoriety some time back by calmly informing" the police that he was guilty of tin; murder of a Chinaman in Wellington (Adelaide road) some years ago. Although lie "boasted that he had done the Chinaman" Harvey nevei stood his trial. He also declared he had assistance and named his accomplice but as ovci ,12 months elapsed between the murder and his "confession" clie police evidently found it impossible to link up the interval.
