TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Wellington-R.C. Summer Meeting opens this day week. In addition to the handicap events, the Waterloo Stakes (one . mile) and Wellington Stakes (five furlongs) will Iraw the principal weight-for-age performers. Acceptances for the first day appear this morning. The Golfer, who has ma'de a good recovery from his recent xaeeident, has been sent down to Trentham to be prepared for Wellington engagements. Bunting is a firm favorite for the Wellington Cup, but whatever beats Indigo and John Barleycorn will surprise most good judges. Menelaus has dropped in vci)> lightly with 7.12 in the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham. Riddiford's neddy and Multiplication look the picks of the handicap. It is stated that King Lupin's poor showing in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie was owing to his losing a plate during the course of the race. He won easily in his next two starts, so backers of Bisogne on the. first day may have been a trifle lucky to lift tiist money. RelScl, who made such a gold showing in the flreat Northern Derby and won the Waiteinata Handicap (one mile and a quarter) very easily, is a rattling good hay colt by Glengowric—(Phyllis, raid carries R. Hannon's colors. He should prove as paying a proposition for the Waikato owner-trainer'as King Lupin--which is saying a good deal. *

Gazkuie, winner of a treble at Awapuni, is, as the name suggests, by Gazeley—Paulecn, and a speedy customer he is. On the third day he entered open ranks, and beat Kangitero, Cease Fire, and other good ones. He ran the six furlongs in linin. 14 1-usec, and scored easily. J Bryoe (10) and A. Pringie (!)) arc the leading riders in trotting ranks at present, and look like having another big tussle for the premiership. From the gallops to the trots is not such a great step after all. "Tartar" Julian drove the winner of ihe Auckland Trotting Cup the other day, and Hen. Declev saluted the judge ;ov the first time in light harness spoit when he rode St. Trella to victory at the same mooting, The introduction of classic races into the programmes of the Taranaki Jockey Club and the Egmont Racing Club has been responsible for a marked improvement in the class of heses entered 'or the principal meetings held by these clubs. Bisogne was quite a aero ot the Auckland meeting, and his linal run in the Royal Stakes was an eye-opener to those who reckoned Biplane was a "•iioral."' The crack two-year-old was in receipt of SOU), but Bisogne came from last to first in a furlong, and catching the southerner thirty yards from home, ran in an easy winner. Dceley, with four firsts and a deadheat, was the most successful horseman at Ellerslie. Emerson rode three winners and a dead-heater; Roj Reed three, H. Robinson three and A. Reid thrac. Several betting rec'ords went by, the board at the Auckland meeting. The total tote investments for the four days reached the colossal amount of £257,228, the totals for three of the days being each larger than evci registered before by any club in the Dominion. The Auckland Cup saw £13780 invested—a New Zealand record —and ,-£4OOO .vent on Sasanof in the Great Northern Derby—a record for any horse in the Dominion. -'Marvellous, isn't it? The volume of betting is getting such that the Auckland Racing Club will have to insta' machines on several parts of the course, the grand totals being shown on one large .machine, .placed in the most suitable position. Those whp have witnessed the betting operations on the "outside" at Ellerslie will agree that this innovation is new a matter of necessity. "Outside" patrons often nave to miss seeing a race so that they can get a place in the queue waiting to bet on the following event.
