Seventy-five recruits were examined by the Medical Board in Hawera on Wednesday. Of these, 42 were passed as fit for active service, 22 were passed as fit for home service, and 11 were rejected as unfit. The physique of the men as a whole was very good, the fit men i being of a particularly fine stamp. The teetli of the men examined were considerably better than those of the previous examinees.—Star. An enjoyable time was spent at the East End 'Pavilion on Thursday evening when a card party and dance was held. Tlie winners at the euchre party were: Ladies Mrs E. Bennoeh 1, Mrs. Gardiner 2. A Tparty comprising Miss L. G. McKay, Miss P. K. Robinson, of Auckland, and Mr. G. W. Dolby, of New Plymouth, made the ascent of Mt. Egniont on Wednesday under rather unique conditions, considering it was in the middle, of summer. A heavy snowstorm had occurred the day previous, and from the 6000 ft level the party walked to the summit on heavy snow, the going being very easy. The crater and summit presented a most beautiful sight, all th» huge rocks being fcstootied with icicles on the east side. A grand panorama view was obtained by the party, and the snow was deep uiough for them to glissade from the water for about 1000 feet.
