HOSPITAL BOARDS' CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 10. ,A conference of delegates of Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards opened to-day with a representative attendance. The Hon. G. W. Russell (Minister of Public Health) and Dr. Valintine (InspectorGeneral of Hospitals) were also present. Mr. Baldwin (chairman of the Wellington Board), who presided, urged that institutions should procure supplies on the basis of co-operative standardisation, instead of through retailers, thereby effecting a great saving. Mr. Russell, in the course of his address, said he was not sure that they would not have to tighten the control of the Government in respect to expenditure by Hospital Boards. He was not prepared to say m what manner, but it might be in providing that all estimates of expenditure by boards must be submitted to the Government, also that important appointments must be subject to the approval of the Government.
WATERSIDERS' DISPUTE SETTLED Wellington, Jan. 10. A dispute originating in Napier regarding the size of gangs loading overMas liners was considered by the Watersillers' Federation and employers to-day. A settlement was arrived at, subject to the approval of tin Napier and Gisbprne unions. WORK RESUMED AT COAt MINES Greymonth, Jan. 10. All the coal mines in the Grey district have resumed work after the holidays, BUSH* FIRES Grey mouth, Jan. 10. Rush fires are interfering with the tan-milling industry, the principal damage being to hutments and tramways.
