Cliarlea Healey, -chief of police of Chicago, has been arrested and charged with graft, involving 20,000 dollars yearly, for protecting the under-world. THAW CHARGED WITH KIDNAPPING. Received Jan. 10, s.f> p.m. New York, Jan. 9. The Grand Jury indicted Harry K. Thaw on a charge of kidnapping a Californian schoolboy, tying him in a room at an hotel and beating him with a whip. A warrant has been issued for Thaw's arrest. BUSH FIRES DESTROY CROPS. ' Sydney, Jan. 10. A heat wave is causing disastrous Lush fires. Thousands of acres of crops have been destroyed in the Trundle, Forbes, and Berrigal districts. i ■ WHEAT HARVEST. Adelaide, Jan. 10. There are indications that the wheat harvest will be better than was anticipated. It is now estimated that it will amount to 35,000,000 bushels. THREE MEN DROWNED. Sydney, Jan. 10. Two brothers named Stoddart, and a companion named Thomas were accidental] v drowned at Wooli.Creek, Amcli.fe. A TRAGEDY. Sydney, Jan. 10. A qtiarvymai) named George Rowe, at Lithgow. attacked his wife with a tomahawk and then attempted to cut his own throat. Finally he committed sucide witl) a shot gun. His wife was taken to a hospital in a serious condition. . THE GO-SLOW POLICY. Sydney. Jan. 10. The Chief Commissioner of Railways.' addressing the men, said that between 1008 and 1015 the go-slow policy had reduced production 15 per cent. FILM CENSORSHIP. Melbourne Jan. 10. The Federal Government will probably accept the Premiers' Conference recommendation to undertake the censorship of films.
