HOSPITAL BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wednesdav, Jan. 10. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board iva? held on Tuesday. Present: Messrs. J. McAllister (chairman), Meredith, C. P. Sole, Rogers, Smith, Morison, and Walter. The Wellington Board wrote, requesting the Board's co-operation regarding the Education Department's methods of charging for inmates in industrial schools, and that the Board would assist the Wellington district in obtaining a decision of the Supreme Court upon the matter—Received, the Board being quite in agreement regarding the conference of Boards on the subject. The Patea Hospital Board wrote, requesting information as to th» various levies, valuations, and population.—lnformation supplied. Nurse Belton'i. resignation, oSvinsr to leaving the district, was accvited"with regret. A testimonial for faithful service is to b; given her when leaving. The engagement of a probatir.ne: was left to the chairman. Tl« naim of Miss 0 Burgess was placed on the probationers' list.
GENERAL, Sngcant-Major Sid. James, who was the only Taranaki soldier among the thirtvtwo who returned to Wellington' by the Riverina, arrived in New Plymouth on Tuesday night. Soon after the war commenced he enlisted as a trooper in the mounted section of the 3rd Reinforcements, rose to his present rank of sergeant-major during the fighting at Gallipoli and in Egypt', and has now been sent back to New Zealand to sit for a commission, lie came unscathed through the Peninsula fighting; but was struck by shrapnel in Egypt, and later had an attack of malarial fever, from which lie has now recovered. SergeantMajor James is a son of Mr. S. H. James, of Stiatford. Ngaere visitors to town report that the recent dry spell has affected the milk yield to a large extmit. Tuesrisy's downfall ( vill improve matters, somewhat, but the ground can stand a lot more moisture. Stratford Oddfellows have now a lady filling the office of Noble Grand. At the last meeting the officers elected ior the next six months were:—VG., Sis. Wasley; V.G.. Bro. S. Thomson; G, Bro. Hart; E.S., Bro. .E Har-ton; secretary, Bro. C. D. Sole; treasurer, Bru. T. T.S..WSOH.

A dance was hold lit Strathmoro recently, and the Patriotic Committee, [through Mr. R. Merod-tli, have r-ecnivccl '•2fh as the result of the evening's pleasure. 'Overseas mails by the recent steamers must have been very bulky, judging bv appearances. The indications are apparent by the fact that dozens of people are to be found handling letters received from the front It is also an illustration of the fact that Taranaki has many hundreds of soldiers fighting in foreign lands.
